치앙마이에서 스위스 국적의 한 남자가 전국민들에게 존경받는 현국왕의 초상화에 심각한 불경죄를 저지른 것에 대한 유죄 판결을 받은것에 항소하였다..

올리버 주퍼씨는 방콕에서 700킬로미터 떨어진 북쪽 치앙마이에서 술에 만취한채 곳곳에 걸려있는 국왕 초상화를 몇점 훼손한 죄로 작년 12월 5일 현장 체포되었다.

그는 공공건물 파손과 국왕 불경죄로 구형을 받았으며 법원 관계자는 15년 이상 구형이 될것이라고 한다.

그는 판결에 대해 항소하였고 법원은 3월 29일로 항소심을 정하였다고 한다.

태국의 푸미폰 아둔야뎃 국왕은 세계에서 최장수 국왕이며 국왕의 권위를 떨어뜨리거나 왕족의 명예를 훼손하는 일련의 일들에 여전히 보호받고 있다.

태국 법은 국왕의 권위를 무너뜨리는 것에 대하여 어느 누구도 경찰에 신고할 수 있도록 함으로 국민들은 국왕이나 왕족들에 관련한 얘기들을 일상 생활속에서 나누는걸 꺼려하고 있다.

주퍼씨의 구형은 작년 6월달로 국왕 즉위 60주년을 맞아 전국민이 왕실의 영광을 찬양하는 특별하고 민감한 시기에 발생되어졌다..

올 12월에 국왕은 80세를 맞는다..

그의 초상화는 공공건물 곳곳에 걸려져 있으며 도시 주요 인도에는 국왕을 찬양하는 제단이 세워져 있다.또한 수백만의 태국인들은 국왕이 태어난 월요일에 그의 영광을 기리기 위하여 노란색의 티셔츠를 입기도 한다.

공공 관심사는 작년 7월 국왕의 등수술이 성공적으로 시술되었다는 의사의 말에도 불구하고 왕의 건강이 악화되고 있으며 이런 사실들은 태국인들로 하여금 누가 국왕의 자리를 승계할까에 대한 섬세한 문제에 대하여 고심하도록 하고 있다..
